The Philippine National Police (PNP) has gone on full alert status from May 9 to 15 to ensure peace and order during the May 12 midterm elections, deploying all 235,000 personnel nationwide.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said police forces are ready to prevent election-related violence and are coordinating closely with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to safeguard the public’s right to vote.
In Metro Manila, NCRPO director Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin affirmed that his command is fully prepared and reminded officers to remain professional and avoid illegal acts.
Meanwhile, the Comelec filed a motu proprio petition to disqualify Pasay mayoral candidate Editha Manguerra for making racist remarks against Indian nationals during a campaign rally.
Although Manguerra claimed her comments were offhand and not intended to be discriminatory, the Comelec said her statements constitute racial incitement, an election offense under Philippine law.
