The Philippines is advancing towards utilizing nuclear energy for household power needs, as Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla announced the finalization of the country’s nuclear energy roadmap through the Nuclear Energy Program-Interagency Committee.
The roadmap aims for a nuclear capacity of 1,200 megawatts (MW) by 2032, with targets increasing to 2,400 MW by 2035 and 4,800 MW by 2050 under the Philippine Energy Plan.
Lotilla highlighted the significance of the recently ratified “123 agreement” with the US, facilitating safe nuclear energy use and technology exchange.
Encouraging private sector investment, Energy Undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara emphasized the potential for nuclear power to meet energy demands sustainably, citing ongoing feasibility studies by Meralco for micro-nuclear power plants.
