The Philippines and China defended their rival claims to Sandy Cay reef after Manila accused Beijing of trying to “intimidate and harass” with a report suggesting it had seized the area.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV published images of Chinese coast guard officers raising their flag on the reef, while the Philippine Coast Guard countered with its flag-raising photo.
Philippine officials denied China’s claim, calling it a fabricated narrative aimed at spreading disinformation.
China’s foreign ministry maintained that its actions were lawful “rights protection” efforts in response to alleged Philippine provocations.
Tensions remain high as both nations exchange accusations amid ongoing US-Philippines military drills and increased Chinese naval presence near Philippine waters.
