The Department of Agriculture (DA) has launched a nationwide modernization program for major fish ports under the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA) to boost competitiveness, create jobs, and support sustainable agri-fishery enterprises.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the initiative aims to transform traditional fishing hubs, such as Navotas, into modern agri-fishery business centers that attract investments and foster entrepreneurship.
The program includes upgrading port infrastructure, cold storage, and logistics systems to improve efficiency and help fisherfolk earn higher incomes.
It also aims to make fish ports more resilient to extreme weather, rising fuel costs, and global market fluctuations, while ensuring the proper handling, preservation, and distribution of fish products.
Tiu Laurel emphasized that collaboration among the government, private sector, and local communities is key to maintaining a stable, affordable supply of fish nationwide.
