PHILIPPINE COLLEGE CURRICULA FACE CRITICISM FOR EXCESSIVE GENERAL EDUCATION, LIMITED PRACTICAL TRAINING

The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) are urged to align efforts by shifting core General Education (GE) competencies to Senior High School (SHS) to reduce college workload and redundancy.

At a recent House Committee hearing, education officials highlighted that about 42% of college credits are GE subjects, leading to longer degree programs with limited practical training and internships.

A Philippine Institute for Development Studies report found that Philippine college courses have more GE units and fewer internships compared to ASEAN and global standards.

DepEd’s revised SHS curriculum now includes core subjects mirroring college-level GE courses, aiming to lighten the college curriculum and better prepare students for both college and careers.

Lawmakers stressed the importance of coordination between CHED and DepEd to avoid duplication and ensure a smooth transition from basic to higher education.
