On Tuesday, Philippine Ambassador to the United States, Jose Manuel Romualdez warns that the ongoing tension between China and the Philippines in the West Philippine Sea is much more serious than people realize.
Romualdez said that the White House is “very concerned” about China’s attempt to block Philippine vessels in the Ayungin Shoal, and has reaffirmed its commitment to support Manila in any capacity.
The envoy said that the situation is “very serious” and goes beyond politics.
He lauded the committed people in the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Philippine Coast Guard, and the Department of Foreign Affairs, saying it is a “do or die” situation for them.
He believes that it is crucial for the Philippines, along with its allies, to take a stand against China’s aggressive actions in the area.
However, Romualdez also emphasizes the importance of not escalating the problem further.
He suggests that the Philippine government should maintain communication with China while reiterating their demands and urging them to stop the current situation.
The tension between the two countries intensified after the water cannon incident in Ayungin Shoal on August 5th.
