The Philippines reaffirmed its commitment to defending its rights in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) using the 2016 Arbitral Ruling as a key pillar of its maritime policy, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on the ruling’s 9th anniversary.
The decision, which invalidated China’s expansive nine-dash line claim, has since been upheld in international law and cited by global tribunals.
The DFA emphasized the award’s importance in promoting a rules-based order and peaceful resolution of maritime disputes.
Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. echoed this stance, vowing continued protection of the country’s maritime domain and the safety of Filipino fishers.
He said defending the WPS is a shared national duty that reflects the unity and resolve of the Filipino people.
