Philippine cement manufacturers have expressed concern that higher US tariffs on Vietnam could increase cement imports to the Philippines, worsening the local industry’s oversupply problem.
During a public hearing, Cement Manufacturers Association of the Philippines president John Reinier Dizon warned that a potential 46% US tariff on Vietnamese exports could redirect excess supply to Asia.
Although the US has paused the tariff hike for 90 days, Dizon said the threat still looms.
He noted that local manufacturers are operating at just 53% of their 51 million-ton capacity due to growing cement imports.
Dizon urged the country to support its domestic industry by maximizing local production and reducing dependence on imports.
