The Philippines and China held their first Joint Consular Consultation (JCC) meeting since 2019 on July 22 in Beijing, focusing on the safety, rights, and welfare of their nationals.
Led by Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Maria Antonina Mendoza-Oblena and Chinese Consular Affairs Director-General Long Zhou, the talks emphasized ongoing cooperation amid challenges and the importance of people-to-people exchanges.
The meeting covered law enforcement collaboration, trade, investment, tourism, and efforts to combat transnational crimes such as illegal gambling.
The JCC also discussed improving information-sharing to better manage consular cases and strengthen bilateral ties.
While the Philippine government supports detained nationals in China, it has not confirmed if their cases were raised during the talks.
