PCG AIMS TO CONCLUDE INVESTIGATION ON AYUNGIN COLLISIONS IN 5 DAYS

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) aims to conclude its investigation into China’s recent incidents in the West Philippine Sea within a five-day period, according to PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. had previously directed the PCG to carry out an inquiry, as required by international maritime laws, regarding the events surrounding the rotation and resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal conducted by China Coast Guard vessels.

The Philippines has strongly criticized China’s recent actions in the West Philippine Sea, which the Department of Defense views as a significant escalation of Beijing’s unlawful activities in the region, showing a blatant disregard for international law norms and conventions.

During a briefing at Malacañang, the Coast Guard’s leader disclosed that he has already instructed the commander of Coast Guard District Palawan to promptly initiate the investigation, with a particular emphasis on ascertaining the extent of damage sustained by the involved vessels.

Although the PCG’s investigation is ongoing, Admiral Gil stated that it is already evident that the Chinese Coast Guard violated collision regulations.

The PCG anticipates presenting the investigation findings to the Office of the President, through the Department of Transportation, for final disposition.
