The Bureau of Customs-Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (BOC-CIIS) seized P29 million worth of marijuana and kush oil hidden in two balikbayan boxes at the Manila International Container Port.
The boxes contained a total of 43 vacuum-sealed pouches with 20,990 grams of kush and one liter of kush oil.
Customs Commissioner Bienvenido Rubio condemned the use of balikbayan boxes for smuggling, calling it an insult to overseas Filipino workers and their families.
The drugs were discovered following a tip-off and physical examination of the boxes at the port, and samples were sent to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) for testing.
The consignees, senders, and recipients of the shipment will face charges for violating several customs and drug laws.
