Filipino boxer Junmilardo Ogayre secured a hard-fought 3-2 split-decision victory over Mongolia’s Gantumur Lundaa in the men’s -60kg preliminaries.
Ogayre stayed composed under relentless pressure, using his jab and precise counters to take the first two rounds on four of five judges’ scorecards.
Lundaa rallied in the final round and forced a standing eight-count on Ogayre, but the Filipino had built enough of a lead to preserve the win.
The victory advanced Ogayre to the next round against Nepal’s Roka Magar and improved the Philippine boxing team’s record to 2-1.
Olympic medalists Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam, along with Riza Pasuit, are also set to compete in the coming days.
