The US House of Representatives passed the “Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act” on Tuesday, banning transgender female students from competing in girls’ sports from kindergarten through 12th grade.
The bill passed with a 218-206 vote, with two Democrats in favor. It aims to amend Title IX to prohibit transgender female athletes from participating in programs designated for girls, defining sex based on “reproductive biology and genetics at birth.”
The bill’s future in the Senate remains uncertain, and House Speaker Mike Johnson argued that transgender women competing against biological females pose a threat to safety and fairness.
Critics, including Johnson, described it as a rejection of reality and fairness in sports.
