NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL REJECTS CIVILIAN CHRISTMAS CONVOY TO AYUNGIN SHOAL

The National Security Council (NSC) has expressed its disapproval of a proposed civilian resupply mission to Ayungin Shoal, a contested area in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

In a statement, the NSC Spokesperson stated that the council “does not support” the planned December 5 convoy to BRP Sierra Madre (LS 57) in Ayungin Shoal or any similar ventures to the disputed territory.

NSC acknowledged the Atin Ito coalition’s “good intentions” but emphasized the risks involved in undertaking such a mission amid heightened tensions. It also reiterated an earlier suggestion for the coalition to focus its efforts on assisting other Philippine-occupied features in the WPS, such as Pag-asa Island.

The coalition has indicated its willingness to turn over its intended donations to the Philippine Navy and Coast Guard for delivery to BRP Sierra Madre.

The shoal falls within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ). However, China maintains its territorial claim over the area, despite a 2016 arbitral ruling invalidating its expansive claims in the South China Sea.

Chinese vessels have repeatedly harassed and obstructed Philippine resupply missions to BRP Sierra Madre, highlighting the volatile nature of the region.
