More Filipino couples are opting to raise pets instead of children due to economic concerns, according to the Commission on Population and Development (CPD).
CPD spokesperson Mylin Mirasol Quiray cited a study showing a rise in fur parenting, with couples prioritizing financial stability before starting families.
The country’s fertility rate has dropped to 1.9 children per woman, below the replacement level of 2.1, partly due to improved family planning.
Quiray also noted a rise in contraceptive use, with pills and injectables being the most preferred methods.
The trend is visible in public spaces, where more couples are seen pushing pet strollers instead of baby strollers.
