Mayor Isko Moreno announced contingency plans to prevent a garbage crisis following the permanent closure of the Navotas Sanitary Landfill. The city will now divert its waste to the New San Mateo Sanitary Landfill in Rizal, which is farther and expected to cause delays in garbage collection. The closure also ends the use of garbage barges, increasing logistical challenges amid heavy traffic and shared landfill use by multiple local government units. Mayor Isko warned that delays in trash pickup could worsen flooding and disease risks, urging residents to hold their garbage until collection trucks arrive. Additional trucks are being deployed to help speed up waste collection during the transition.
