President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is open to discussing the Philippines’ possible return to the International Criminal Court (ICC), Malacañang said Thursday.
This follows a recommendation by UN Special Rapporteur Irene Khan urging the country to rejoin the ICC and ratify international human rights laws.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said the President will carefully study the suggestion and has already expressed openness to it.
The Philippines withdrew from the ICC in 2019 under former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is now detained at the ICC for alleged crimes against humanity.
Malacañang also highlighted growing international recognition of the current administration’s efforts to improve human rights and address past abuses.
