President Marcos may veto the bill seeking to postpone the December 2025 barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE), according to Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III, who cited Marcos’ preference for the polls to push through as scheduled.
The proposed measure aims to reset the elections to November 2026 to allow barangay officials elected in 2023 to complete a full four-year term, instead of just two years.
Senator Imee Marcos defended the bill’s constitutionality, asserting that, unlike past measures, this one permanently sets term lengths for barangay and SK officials.
The ratified version of the bill would also allow barangay officials to serve three consecutive four-year terms, while SK officials would serve one four-year term.
Supporters of the bill argue it would streamline local governance and give the Commission on Elections more time to focus on the Bangsamoro parliamentary polls.
