President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has proclaimed May 16 each year as “National Education Support Personnel Day” to honor their essential role in ensuring quality education.
The declaration follows the signing of Republic Act 12178, known as the “National Education Support Personnel Day Act,” on April 15 and its publication in the Official Gazette on April 25.
The law tasks the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education to oversee the observance of the day.
Education support personnel include both teaching and non-teaching staff in public and private institutions, such as librarians, counselors, nurses, and clerks.
The DepEd employs over 107,000 non-teaching staff, while state universities and colleges have over 63,000 education support personnel.
