Mayor Abby Binay of Makati City mentioned that she might run for the position of Mayor in Taguig City. This announcement came as she distributed school supplies to students in the area that was previously part of Makati but now belongs to Taguig.
When asked about her plans for the 2025 elections, Mayor Binay stated that running for Taguig Mayor is an option she is considering. However, she has not made a final decision yet because it is a difficult choice to make.
Mayor Binay acknowledged that running for Mayor in Taguig would be challenging since she is not familiar with the place. Despite this, she believes that she can implement many beneficial programs and projects for the city.
The distribution of school supplies took place after the Department of Education (DepEd) granted permission to the Makati city government. This permission allowed them to provide free supplies to students in the 14 public elementary and high schools in the 10 barangays that are now under Taguig’s jurisdiction.
Mayor Binay explained that even though they received permission to distribute supplies as early as August 18, they waited for written confirmation before proceeding. She emphasized the importance of having official authorization before carrying out such activities.
The free supplies, which include uniforms, bags, anti-dengue kits, shoes, socks, notebooks, ballpens, and pencils, will be given to students from kindergarten to Grade 6, including those in special education.
Mayor Binay revealed that Taguig made a last-minute attempt to block the distribution of supplies, requesting a written authority for the activity. However, Makati was able to secure the necessary authorization, unbeknownst to Taguig.
Mayor Binay emphasized that the schools should not be treated as war zones, and the students and teachers should not be affected by the dispute between Taguig and Makati. She also dismissed Taguig’s claims that Makati had not provided the list of beneficiaries, stating that the city government had given the list to DepEd as early as August 1.
