Baguio City, under Mayor Benjamin Magalong, has earned global recognition from ICLEI Southeast Asia’s Paris to Belem campaign as one of the region’s leading examples of successful local climate action.
City Planning and Sustainability chief Donna Tabangin highlighted the city’s commitment to innovation, including the construction of 14 kilometers of bike lanes across 11 routes to promote cycling and reduce congestion.
The city is also pursuing an ambitious zero-waste strategy aiming for an 80% waste reduction by 2032, following a study showing Baguio generates 593 tons of waste daily.
To address this, Baguio has strengthened barangay materials recovery facilities, enforced waste segregation, and empowered communities to adopt composting.
Tabangin said these efforts are transforming Baguio into a regenerative and climate-resilient model city, leading environmental innovation in Southeast Asia.
