LEGARDA CALLS FOR PROTECTION OF JOURNALISTS, RIGHT TO TRUTH

Sen. Loren Legarda called for stronger protection of journalists and media workers, stressing that press freedom is essential to the public’s right to reliable information.

She noted that the Philippines ranked 114th out of 180 countries in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index and remains one of the most dangerous places for journalists.

Legarda also warned against misinformation and urged both journalists and government institutions to distinguish verified facts from allegations.

She renewed support for Senate Bill No. 807, or the proposed Media Workers Welfare Act, which seeks better working conditions and protections for media workers.

She said protecting journalists and press freedom helps ensure that Filipinos can access the truth and hold public officials accountable.
