EJERCITO: SENATE BUDGET HEARINGS TO AVOID DUTERTE IMPEACHMENT ISSUES

The Senate Finance Committee will not use hearings on the proposed P7.2-trillion 2027 national budget to discuss the merits of Vice President Sara Duterte’s ongoing impeachment trial.

Committee chairman Sen. JV Ejercito said the panel will follow the Senate Impeachment Court’s sub judice rule, which restricts public discussion of pending impeachment issues.

He said lawmakers may instead discuss ways to ensure confidential and intelligence funds are properly authorized, used, and accounted for.

Ejercito also said he would limit access to such funds to agencies involved in law enforcement, intelligence, and national security.

He stressed that public funds must be handled with accountability and responsibility.
