Senator Loren Legarda called on Filipinos to lead global efforts in ocean protection and climate resilience ahead of the upcoming UN Ocean Conference in June.
Speaking at a forum in Antique, she emphasized the need for concrete support to vulnerable groups like fisherfolk, coastal women, and indigenous communities.
Legarda highlighted the country’s reliance on the ocean and the threats it faces, including declining fish stocks, degraded coral reefs, and plastic pollution.
She noted that the Philippines is among the world’s top contributors to ocean plastic waste, which endangers future generations.
Legarda also cited pending legislation, such as the Blue Economy Bill, aimed at promoting sustainable fishing and marine conservation.
