The Metro Manila International Film Festival will honor Lea Salonga with the Icon Award during its closing night gala on Sept. 6 at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
MMFF Executive Producer Lisa Lew praised Salonga as an “ultimate ambassador for Filipino excellence,” citing her achievements in theater, film, and as the voice behind iconic Disney heroines.
The festival also nominated Salonga for a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, making her the first Filipino born and raised in the Philippines set to receive the recognition.
Salonga admitted in an earlier interview that the honor still feels surreal, saying she initially thought the announcement was a prank because most of her work has been based in New York and Manila rather than Hollywood.
Other artists with Filipino roots who previously received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame include Bruno Mars, apl.de.ap, and Rob Schneider.
