In response to the recent weather disruptions, the Department of Education (DepEd) has extended the deadline for late enrollees for the School Year 2023-2024 until the end of September.
Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas, the deputy spokesperson for DepEd, conveyed this update via Viber message to reporters on Wednesday. He expressed confidence that the department will still meet its enrollment target of 28.8 million for the current school year.
As of Wednesday, 9 a.m., the Education Department is still 3 million students short of its target.
The total number of enrolled students in public schools, private schools, State Universities and Colleges (SUCs), and Local Universities and Colleges (LUCs) currently stands at 25,890,617.
The data from the Department of Education’s Learner Information System (LIS) shows that Calabarzon has the highest number of students enrolled so far, with 3,821,034 students.
Central Luzon is next with 2,817,827 students, followed by the National Capital Region with 2,675,386 students, and Central Visayas with 1,999,476 students. Meanwhile, the Cordillera Administrative Region has the lowest number of enrolled students at 406,815.
The enrollment numbers are still changing as schools update their data on the LIS. Once all schools have reported, the enrollment process will close, and we will have the official number of students for this school year.
The Department of Education will also implement procedures to find out why some students are not returning to school.
In the previous academic year, there were 28.4 million students enrolled across the country.
