The International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) has deployed an International Observer Mission (IOM) to monitor the May 2025 elections, responding to concerns over rising poll violence.
Between January 12 and April 11, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) recorded 46 incidents of political violence, with red-tagging accounting for nearly 79% of 733 reports.
ICHRP Vice Chairman Patricia Lisson highlighted the Philippines’ history of election-related violence, particularly in rural areas, and emphasized the mission’s role in safeguarding civil and political rights.
The IOM, which previously observed the 2022 presidential elections, will also monitor issues like misinformation, vote-buying, and violence.
Led by a team of human rights and peace-building experts, the mission aims to provide impartial oversight amid growing concerns over state-sponsored harassment and election-related killings.
