The International Criminal Court (ICC) has unanimously rejected former President Rodrigo Duterte’s appeal for interim release, upholding the earlier ruling that he must remain detained while facing crimes against humanity charges.
The court cited Duterte’s risk of flight, potential to intimidate witnesses, and possibility of committing new crimes, noting his political influence and network of supporters in the Philippines.
The appeals chamber dismissed all three arguments raised by Duterte’s defense, including state guarantees, humanitarian concerns, and alleged errors by the pre-trial chamber.
Duterte, who waived his right to attend the hearing, has been held at the ICC’s Scheveningen Prison in the Netherlands since his arrest in March 2025 over killings linked to his war on drugs.
The court will continue to review his detention at least every 120 days, while a medical panel assesses his fitness to stand trial.
