The Senate inquiry into the arrest and turnover of former President Rodrigo Duterte to the International Criminal Court (ICC) has failed to impress Duterte’s partner, Honeylet Avanceña, who dismissed it as a mere “pa-ekek” (empty talk).
Avanceña also criticized Senator Imee Marcos for questioning what happened, asking if she hadn’t already seen it herself.
Tensions within the Senate surfaced when Senate President Francis Escudero intervened after Marcos ordered the detention of a resource person, Markus Lacanilao, without the necessary approval.
Escudero emphasized that such decisions should align with Senate rules and warned against using the chamber for personal political gain.
The hearings, which began in March, have seen attendance issues, with some officials invoking executive privilege, leading Marcos to threaten subpoenas.
