Vehicles weighing more than three tons are now prohibited from crossing the San Juanico Bridge in Eastern Visayas due to ongoing repair works aimed at strengthening the bridge’s structural integrity.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced that the P900-million rehabilitation project will take two years to complete.
Instead of fully closing the bridge, authorities imposed a weight limit to allow lighter vehicles to continue passing while redirecting heavier trucks and buses to roll-on roll-off vessels at nearby ports.
Traffic congestion occurred at the Leyte and Samar approaches as some drivers were unaware of the new restrictions.
The DPWH emphasized the importance of enforcing the weight limit to ensure motorist safety and the successful completion of the maintenance work.
