GOVERNMENT TUG-OF-WAR: DILG AND DOH TACKLE MAKATI-TAGUIG FEUD

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is stepping in to mediate the row between Makati and Taguig over healthcare in 10 disputed barangays. Secretary Benhur Abalos plans to meet both mayors, urging them to prioritize public interest over legal technicalities.

The dispute stems from Makati’s closure of health facilities in these barangays, arguing their licenses expired after the areas shifted to Taguig’s jurisdiction. However, the Department of Health (DOH) intervened, extending the application deadline for new licenses until January 15th. This ensures uninterrupted healthcare access for residents while the dispute is resolved.

The DOH stressed its commitment to ensuring “every Filipino” receives convenient and quality healthcare regardless of jurisdiction. It’s open to applications from any provider, potentially allowing facilities to retain their operations under new licenses.

With DILG facilitating dialogue and DOH offering temporary solutions, the future of healthcare in these barangays remains uncertain. Both cities and the national agencies will need to work together to find a permanent solution that prioritizes the needs of residents.
