Malacañang has assured the public that the government is ready for the three-day nationwide jeepney strike that began today, with preemptive measures in place, including school closures and alternative learning options.
Around 100,000 public utility jeepneys (PUJs) are expected to participate in the strike, organized by the transport group Manibela to protest discrepancies in the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board’s (LTFRB) reporting of the public utility vehicle modernization program.
In response, the government has deployed additional buses along the EDSA bus carousel and increased train services on MRT-3 and LRT lines 1 and 2, while the MMDA is offering free bus rides in affected areas.
Manibela’s chairman, Mar Valbuena, criticized the government’s handling of the PUVMP, claiming false data has led to fines and the inability of jeepney drivers to renew their registrations.
Despite calls for dialogue, Valbuena emphasized the group’s frustration, with some schools also announcing class suspensions due to the strike.
