Google is introducing new tools to help its users keep their online information safe and accurate.
One of the new tools will help users delete search results about themselves that contain untrue information, unwanted contact details, or copyright violations.
This tool will create a personal dashboard where users can keep an eye on any new information popping up about them online, receive notifications, and request to have items removed.
If users want to remove content from the search results that are inaccurate or offensive, they can submit a request to Google.
This tool can’t delete information from the internet, but it can stop it from showing up in search results.
If you find information about yourself online that you don’t want people to see, you can request that Google remove it from search results.
However, you will need to contact the website that posted the information and ask them to remove it themselves.
Google will also introduce a new tool for parents to blur explicit images from their children’s search results.
Over 80% of Americans are concerned about the risks associated with data collection by companies, according to a 2019 study by Pew Research.
The concerns about specific platforms have only grown recently, with TikTok (owned by ByteDance) being seen as a threat to national security since May 2023.
TikTok was found to have spied on the location of a Forbes journalist in October 2022, and some user data of American TikTok creators were stored in China, contrary to CEO Shou Zi Chew’s statement under oath in the U.S. Congress, according to Forbes.
