Sen. Robinhood Padilla announced that Senators Bong Go and Ronald Dela Rosa have signed his resolution calling for the immediate repatriation of former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently detained at the ICC detention center in the Netherlands.
Padilla emphasized that the resolution is a call for unity, justice, and the assertion of Philippine sovereignty, arguing that Duterte, a long-serving public official, should not be tried by a foreign court for actions committed in the Philippines.
The original resolution, filed before the 19th Congress adjourned, was refiled in the 20th Congress after it was not accepted under Senate rules.
The measure also highlights the Philippine government’s position that the country’s justice system is capable of handling investigations, thus rejecting ICC jurisdiction.
Padilla cited public rallies and survey results opposing Duterte’s detention, as well as President Marcos’ previous openness to reconciliation with the former president.
