Former Senator Leila de Lima was finally released on bail on November 13, 2023, after more than six years in detention.
The Muntinlupa court granted her bail in the last drug case against her, which had seen several government witnesses recant their testimonies.
Expressing her gratitude, De Lima described the moment as a “triumphant thanksgiving,” thanking both God and her unwavering supporters who have stood by her side since her arrest in 2017.
De Lima has maintained her innocence throughout her detention, saying that the charges against her are politically motivated.
She was arrested in 2017 on charges of drug trafficking and corruption. She was acquitted in one drug case in May 2023, and another drug case against her was junked in 2021.
