The European Union has launched an antitrust investigation into Google over allegations that it used content from media outlets and YouTube creators to train its AI systems without proper compensation.
The European Commission is examining whether Google imposed unfair terms on publishers, gave itself privileged access to content, and blocked rival AI developers from using similar data.
EU competition chief Teresa Ribera emphasized that AI innovation must not come at the expense of a free and diverse media landscape.
Google defended its practices, claiming AI tools like summaries and “AI Mode” help users discover content and that it provides controls for content management.
The probe, which could result in fines of up to 10 percent of Google’s global revenue, has no set deadline and does not pre-judge the outcome.
