EMBASSY IN BEIJING COORDINATES AID FOR ARRESTED PINOYS

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has directed the Philippine Embassy in Beijing to assist Filipinos arrested in China over alleged immigration violations.

The DFA urged Chinese authorities to protect the detainees and promptly notify Philippine officials, in line with consular agreements.

The arrests came after Philippine authorities detained about 70 Chinese workers in Misamis Oriental in May for alleged immigration and work permit violations.

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. criticized China’s move, calling the arrests of over 100 Filipinos “extortion and blackmail.”

He also said the Philippine government is not targeting Chinese businesses or businessmen in the country.
