ELECTRICITY PRICES DROP NATIONWIDE AMID HIGHER SUPPLY, LOWER DEMAND

Average power prices in the Philippines fell to P3.04 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in September from P4.59 per kWh in August — the lowest in seven months, according to the Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP).

The decline was driven by higher supply, lower demand, and the absence of major power plant outages, said IEMOP’s Arjon Valencia.

Luzon recorded the biggest drop at P2.57 per kWh from P3.76, while Visayas and Mindanao prices also fell to P4.02 and P4.19 per kWh, respectively.

Average nationwide supply rose to 20,712 megawatts (MW), while demand decreased to 13,640 MW.

IEMOP added that the impact of the recent Visayas earthquake on power prices will be reflected in October’s billing period.
