Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. warned of a possible egg shortage in April, urging immediate action to prevent the crisis.
The shortage is projected due to oversupply and lower prices in 2023, which led to the culling of laying hens by many local producers.
Tiu Laurel recommended funding support from financial institutions like the Land Bank of the Philippines and the Development Bank of the Philippines to help repopulate egg-laying stocks.
The DA is pushing for the importation of egg-laying chickens and the swift approval of avian influenza vaccines to secure the industry’s future supply.
