Environmental group EcoWaste Coalition urged the incoming 20th Congress to prioritize a law banning hazardous chemicals in children’s products, especially school supplies.
Their call follows a recent market test in Metro Manila, where 34 out of 95 sampled items contained toxic substances like lead and cadmium, exceeding legal safety limits.
EcoWaste highlighted serious risks to children’s health, emphasizing the need for comprehensive legislation with clear standards, mandatory labeling, and enforcement.
Experts pointed out that children are especially vulnerable to chemical exposure due to their developing bodies and habits.
The group also offered safety tips for consumers while stressing that stronger laws are crucial to protect every child’s right to a safe, toxic-free environment.
