Former President Rodrigo Duterte’s appeal for interim release before the International Criminal Court will be heard and livestreamed on November 28.
The appeal argues that Duterte’s age, infirmity, and debilitated state make detention “cruel” while he awaits confirmation of charges.
This follows a previous ICC denial in September 2025, which cited risks of flight and public statements by his family opposing detention.
Duterte’s defense also challenged the ICC’s jurisdiction, citing the Philippines’ withdrawal from the Rome Statute in 2019.
Duterte, arrested in March 2025, faces crimes against humanity charges linked to his anti-drug campaign, which reportedly caused thousands of deaths.
