DPWH CONSIDERS DIRECT PROCUREMENT TO COMBAT CORRUPTION

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) plans to curb corruption by purchasing dredging equipment directly and handling dredging operations itself, said DPWH chief Manuel Bonoan.

The agency admitted delays in dredging activities due to a lack of proper equipment, but funding has been allotted for the purchase in the 2026 National Expenditure Project.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently ordered an audit of flood control projects, including dredging, promising to file cases against corrupt officials.

The ongoing audit encompasses projects from both the current and previous administrations, with some infrastructure requiring reassessment due to wear and the impacts of climate change.

Bonoan also said the DPWH will revise infrastructure designs better to address the growing risks of floods and cyclones.
