The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has directed the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) to study a proposed special permit for public utility buses to operate along the LRT-2 route from Antipolo to Recto and vice versa.
The move aims to provide commuters with alternative transportation amid limited train operations, with only eight trains deployed as of Friday due to upgrades and repairs.
Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez apologized to affected passengers and said the initiative seeks to ease overcrowding at stations, especially during peak hours.
Authorities are also reviewing bus operations, fare rates, and regulatory requirements for the proposed route.
The DOTr said securing additional trainsets remains a priority, but the arrival of new trains could take at least three years.
