DOTR SLOWS DOWN PUV MODERNIZATION AMID LOW CONSOLIDATION NUMBERS

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced a slower implementation of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) following low consolidation numbers and concerns from transport groups.

Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon revealed discrepancies in data, with only about 40% of applications approved despite the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) claiming an 86% consolidation rate.

The conflicting figures triggered a three-day transport strike, affecting commuters in key cities, and prompting the government to deploy free rides.

Dizon acknowledged the need for validated data and financial support to ensure modernization continues without undue burden on drivers and operators.

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) refused to suspend the number coding scheme, stating that the strike had a minimal impact on traffic.
