The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has launched a world-first cashless payment system for Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3), allowing commuters to pay fares via digital wallets, debit and credit cards, and other methods.
The upgraded turnstiles accept multiple payment options, including QR code e-wallets, tap-to-pay Android phones, prepaid cards, and stored-value beep cards.
The system charges a flat fare of ₱28 for an end-to-end trip and automatically calculates change upon exit, though discounts for seniors, persons with disabilities, and students are still being integrated.
The DOTr is partnering with GCash, RCBC, Land Bank, and Mastercard to ensure secure and convenient transactions, with plans to expand to other digital wallets and transit systems soon.
Meanwhile, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is enhancing free WiFi access along MRT-3 and plans to extend this service to LRT lines and other public transport hubs.
