The Department of National Defense (DND) defended President Marcos Jr.’s plan to raise the base pay of military and uniformed personnel (MUP), calling the adjustment “long overdue” and dismissing claims of political motives.
DND Spokesperson Arsenio Andolong said a technical working group has been created to review the policy and prepare for its implementation.
Labor groups questioned why uniformed personnel were prioritized over civilian workers, but Andolong emphasized that the pay hike is justified given the demanding nature of military work.
The 15-percent salary increase will be rolled out over the next three years, marking the first adjustment since the Duterte administration seven years ago.
Andolong stressed that the move aims to support soldiers’ welfare and boost morale, not to appease any political interests.
