Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon announced that a retention basin will be built in Arayat, Pampanga, to reduce flooding after a collapsed flood control dike left many families affected.
The project, approved by DPWH engineers and the technical working group, is expected to be completed in a few months and will benefit residents of Barangays Candating and Cupang.
Dizon said the retention basin will act like a man-made pond to collect runoff and lessen flood impact, while the dike’s collapse is still under separate investigation due to missing geotechnical data.
The DPWH plans to overhaul the dike’s design following President Marcos’ directive, and Dizon warned that the area may be declared a danger zone.
He added that forced evacuations could be implemented in coordination with the local government to protect residents before the rainy season begins.
