Akbayan Party-list Rep. Chel Diokno rejected Vice President Sara Duterte’s lawyer Michael Poa’s claim that the prosecution’s request for bank, tax, and AMLC records was a “fishing expedition.”
Diokno cited a 2022 Supreme Court ruling that allowed the examination of bank records in unexplained wealth cases, saying it supports the prosecution’s request.
He argued that the requested documents are necessary to determine allegations of unexplained wealth, omitted assets in SALNs, and possible business involvement while in office.
Diokno also denied that issuing subpoenas would violate Duterte’s due process rights, saying the defense would still have opportunities to object during the trial.
The defense had opposed the release of the records, arguing that the request was premature and amounted to an improper search for evidence.
