The Department of Foreign Affairs expressed concern over developments in Venezuela following the reported capture of President Nicolás Maduro by US forces, urging respect for international law, state sovereignty, and the peaceful resolution of disputes.
The DFA said it is closely monitoring the situation and has issued a safety advisory for the 74 Filipinos in Venezuela, assuring that assistance is ready if needed.
US President Donald Trump said Maduro and his wife will face US court proceedings and that Washington intends to oversee a transition of power in Venezuela.
Economic officials said the crisis is unlikely to have a significant impact on the Philippine economy due to weak direct links, while police were placed on alert for possible protests in the country.
Activist groups, meanwhile, condemned the US action as a violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty and the UN Charter.
