The Department of Education’s school-based feeding program will support 4.49 million students for 200 days next year, following the Senate’s approval of a ₱28.66-billion budget.
Education Secretary Sonny Angara said proper nutrition is essential to improving early literacy, noting that this year’s budget was only ₱11.78 billion.
The expanded program will provide 45-day feeding for over 800,000 wasted and severely wasted junior and senior high school students, and 30-day feeding for more than 7,200 adolescent pregnant learners.
Kindergarten to grade six students will receive hot meals and fortified food products, prioritizing those most nutritionally at risk.
DepEd will also fund 219 central kitchens and mobile kitchen units to strengthen meal delivery nationwide.
